Mary Monteiro
Mary studied painting at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the early seventies. She left to study as an artist apprentice with classical painter Eugene Tonoff. After two years she joined an advertising agency in Providence, focusing on product and fashion illustration.
In 1976 she launched her career as a freelance illustrator working primarily in book publishing and giftware design. Several of her giftware lines have sold as collectibles nationally and internationally.
Mary now chooses to focus her art on nature themed oil painting and portraiture. “In my landscapes I create art that helps people connect with the serenity that is inherent in nature to bring about a sense of peace in their lives. In my portraiture of people and pets I aim to capture the subject’s spirit as well as their likeness. Working as a commercial illustrator for so many years has taught me how to listen and has made me an easy artist to work with.”
